Where these figures come from
- 7.48052 US gallons per cubic foot by definition.
- Kidney factor 0.75 and oval as an ellipse: the pool trade's estimating rules.
- Water rates vary by utility; the default is a placeholder.
Chemical doses, pump sizing and a fill-up bill all start from the gallons. Pick the shape, type the length and width (or the diameter), and the shallow and deep-end depths; the sheet averages the depth, converts to gallons and liters, and estimates the water bill at a rate you can edit.
Worked examples
- Rectangle 32 × 16 ft, 3.5 to 8 ft
- 22,023 gal — gallons, about $132 Water to fill.
- Round above-ground 24 ft, 4 ft flat
- 13,536 gal — gallons, about $81 Water to fill.
How it is worked out
Surface area by shape (rectangle L × W; round π r²; oval π × L/2 × W/2; kidney L × W × 0.75) × average depth = cubic feet. Gallons = cubic feet × 7.48. Liters = gallons × 3.785. Cost = gallons ÷ 1,000 × the rate.
The figures behind it

Every figure here is an estimate. Materials vary with moisture, compaction and product; order a little extra and confirm quantities with your supplier.
Questions people ask
- How many gallons in a 16 × 32 pool?
- With a 3.5 ft shallow end and 8 ft deep end, about 22,000 gallons. Every foot of average depth in that pool is about 3,830 gallons.
- How do I get the average depth?
- Add the shallow-end and deep-end depths and divide by two. That is exact for a straight slope; if the deep end is a hopper, measure the depth at a few points and average them.
- Why does the kidney shape use 0.75?
- A kidney pool covers roughly three-quarters of the rectangle that encloses it. It is the industry's estimating figure, close enough for chemicals; for a fill-up bill read the meter.
