Where these figures come from
  • Density 1.5 tons per cu yd for crushed limestone or granite (rule of thumb; quarries quote 1.4–1.7).
  • Sold by the ton at quarries; bagged in 0.5 cu ft (50 lb) bags at stores.
  • Prices are typical US quarry and retail figures at the date on this sheet.

Crushed stone is quoted by the ton at most quarries and by the yard at garden centers. Type the area and depth; the sheet shows both, plus bags for small jobs and the cost at the price you enter. Use 4–6 inches for a base course and 2–3 inches for a top course.

Worked examples

Driveway base 12 × 60 ft, 6 in
14 cu yd crushed stone needed at 6 in deep, about $840 in bulk.
French drain 2 × 40 ft, 12 in
3.11 cu yd crushed stone needed at 12 in deep, about $187 in bulk.
Shed pad 10 × 12 ft, 4 in
1.56 cu yd crushed stone needed at 4 in deep, about $93 in bulk.

How it is worked out

Area (length × width × number of areas) × depth in feet = cubic feet; add the settling allowance; divide by 27 for cubic yards. Weight = cubic yards × the density you see in the material fields. Bags = cubic feet ÷ the bag's cubic feet, rounded up. Cost = the bulk quantity × your bulk price, or bags × your bag price, whichever you marked.

The figures behind it

  • Density 1.5 tons per cu yd for crushed limestone or granite (rule of thumb; quarries quote 1.4–1.7).
  • Sold by the ton at quarries; bagged in 0.5 cu ft (50 lb) bags at stores.
  • Prices are typical US quarry and retail figures at the date on this sheet.

Every figure here is an estimate. Materials vary with moisture, compaction and product; order a little extra and confirm quantities with your supplier.

Questions people ask

How many tons of crushed stone in a cubic yard?
About 1.5 tons. So a 10 × 10 ft area 4 inches deep (1.23 cu yd) needs roughly 1.9 tons.
What is #57 stone?
A ¾ to 1 inch washed crushed stone with no fines, the usual choice for drainage and a driveway top course. Crusher run (stone with dust) packs harder and is used for bases.
How deep should a gravel driveway be?
A 4–6 inch compacted base of crusher run under 2–3 inches of #57 or similar. The sheet's depth field takes one layer at a time; run it twice for two materials.
